Historic Oakland Cemetery
Widely known as the oldest public park in Atlanta, Historic Oakland Cemetery is one of the city’s greatest treasures. Founded in 1849, this is the final resting place of some notable Atlantans, including the Hinman family, one of Atlanta’s original ‘Blue Book’ families, and the occupants of Stonehurst Place from 1896 – 1996. Other recognizable names of Atlantan’s buried at Oakland include Margaret Mitchell, writer of “Gone With the Wind,” Bobby Jones, considered the greatest amateur golfer of all time, and co-founder of the nation’s first PTA for African Americans, Selena Sloan Butler.
