A day trip from Atlanta to Callaway Gardens is perfect for a romantic retreat or tranquil solo adventure! The site’s 2,500-acres are filled with beautiful gardens, peaceful nature trails, and outstanding natural beauty. Visitors can observe 1,000 or more butterflies fluttering freely in the butterfly conservatory or explore the Callaway Brothers Azalea Bowl’s more than 3,000 native and hybrid azaleas. With so much to do, there is never a dull moment at Callaway Gardens. From bike trails to beautiful wildlife, there is no doubt Callaway Gardens is one of Georgia’s gems.

For The Nature Lover: Providence Canyon State Park

A little farther south, you’ll find one of the seven natural wonders of Georgia, Providence Canyon State Park! This incredible rock formation is often referred to as Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon. The formation’s enormous gullies run as deep as 150 feet. A short trek through the canyon’s hiking trails and winding walls will reveal gorgeous hues of pink, orange, red, and purple. With spectacular colors like these, this area is ideal for stunning photographs and picturesque hikes. If you visit during July and August, you may even encounter the rare plum leaf azalea along the trail.

For The Angler: Lake Lanier

Northwest of the city is the famous Lake Lanier. The lake spreads across 38,000 acres and holds approximately 637 billion gallons of water. This immense body of water is an excellent spot for fishing, and it is home to rainbow trout, crappie, and several types of bass, among others. In addition to fishing, the area offers a plethora of year-round activities like boating, hiking, golfing, and more.
